Early pregnancy is an extremely exciting but nerve-wracking time. Perhaps you’re a first-time mum, venturing into a new phase of your life, or maybe you’ve experienced pregnancy complications in past. Either way, it’s natural to feel apprehensive about your pregnancy and the health of your unborn child – which is why many women now choose to have an early reassurance scan.
Two scans are currently offered as part of the NHS, one at 12 weeks to calculate a due date and one at 20 weeks to check for anomalies. However, for an anxious mum-to-be, this can seem like a very long time to wait. A reassurance scan is something to put your mind at rest. The high-quality service provided by Hello Baby includes an early pregnancy scan, which is a fantastic way to do this if we do say so ourselves!
Why should I have an early reassurance scan?
Ease your worries and concerns
Most clinics offering an early reassurance scan are non-medical, which means they cannot confirm or deny the viability of your pregnancy. However, they are fully-qualified professionals and they can usually spot early signs of complication (e.g. ectopic pregnancy). This can help to ease your initial concerns and, if something does require attention, an additional NHS scan can then be arranged.
Find out when your baby is due to arrive
Early reassurance scans are a fantastic way to confirm your gestation period and get a rough estimate of your baby’s due date. Providing that you are at least six weeks into the pregnancy, the sonographer will be able to take measurements of the baby, from the crown to the rump. These measurements can then be used to estimate when mini-me will make their grand entrance!
Confirm a single or multiple pregnancy
If twins run in the family, you may wish to find out if you have been blessed in the same way. Multiple pregnancies are more common than ever before and they can often be confirmed during an early pregnancy scan – when either two amniotic sacs or two separate heartbeats are detected.
Hear the tiny heartbeat for yourself
A baby’s heartbeat can usually be detected using ultrasound from 6 weeks – which is why private early reassurance scans are typically offered from this point onwards. It may not seem like much, but just hearing this continuous beat can be incredibly reassuring for a newly pregnant mum. It is often what people need to put their mind at rest and make them believe that everything will be ok.
Say hello to your beautiful baby
An early reassurance scan is a magical experience. Here at Hello Baby, we offer parents the chance to see their baby in clear 2D, 3D, or 4D imagery, in the extremely early stages of their pregnancy. This is a fantastic opportunity, helping you to connect with your baby and make the pregnancy feel more real – you can even take home a copy of the scanned image.
